PostSubject: Night Elf phrases and specific words!   Tue 4 Jul - 14:26

Don't know if this is the right place to post it. But i Highly suggest you take a look at this, as it is very useful and can really add to the RP.

Taken from: this post on the ER realm forums.

As I think there is a great deal of you role-players that want to use certain words that will strengthen your RP, I found this on WoWWiki's site. This will take up words and names and also phrases of the languages of the Nightelfs and of the Trolls.

Enjoy.

Darnassian

Some words
These are individual words or syllables whose meaning can be determined individually. Like any language, not everything translates directly into English (the analog of Common on most US realms), . Speculation as to direct translations are in italics.

"Delar" = "Ancient Keepers"
"Dorei" = "Borne" (Since we have not seen "dorei" applied to any non-elven race, it can be assumed that it is only used in regard to Elven races.)
"Kal" = "Star"
"Kaldorei" = "Starborne", "Children of the Stars", "Night Elves"
"Kalimdor" = "Land of Eternal Starlight"
"Lok" = "Stave"
"Lok'delar" = "Stave of the Ancient Keepers"
"Medivh" = "Keeper of Secrets"
"Quel" = "High"
"Quel'dorei" = "Highborne", "High Elves"
"Quel'Serrar" = "The High Blade"
"Quel'thalas" = "The High Kingdom" or "The High Home" (Curiously, the name Quel'thalas seems to remain, even though it should technically be "Sin'Thalas")
"Rhok" = "Longbow"
"Rhok'delar" = "Longbow of the Ancient Keepers"
"Ronae" = "Peaceful"
"Serrar" = "Blade"
"Shan" = "Honor"
"Shan'do" = lit. "Honored Teacher"
"Sin" = "Blood"
"Sin'dorei" = "Bloodborne", "Blood Elves"
"Thalas" = "Kingdom"; "Home"
"Thero" = "Student"
"Thero'Shan" = lit. "Honored Student"
"Zaram" = "Blade"

Some Darnassian Phrases

These phrases cannot be directly translated or even broken into translatable words, as no lexicon of Darnassian has been made avaliable- the words in the previous section were either directly translated, or could have been confirmed by analysis. While translation of these phrases are guesswork, the general idea of the phrase is easy to guess while listening.

Elune-Adore, common greeting among Night Elves. (Eternity's End campaign).
Ishnu-alah, elven initial greeting (Eternity's End, et al).
Ishnu-dal-dieb, elven return greeting (Eternity's End, et al).
Andethoras-ethil, said by Malfurion when Illidan searched for Tyrande (The Brothers Stormrage, Terror of the Tides campaign).
Tor'ilisar-therenol!, shouted by Maiev before joining battle with the Naga.
Enshu-falah-nah, elven goodbye; said by Illidan when he said goodbye to Furion and Tyrande.
Asha'falah, elven goodbye.
Anu'dora, an agreement or confirmation.
Az'thero'dalah'dor, some form of confirmation- used often by Shan'do Stormrage
Ana'duna thera, battle cry.
Ashra thoraman?, often used by Priestesses of the Moon (Eternity's End, et al).

Possible Translations

"I honor Elune", "Elune's blessing"
"Greetings", "Good Day", "Peace be with you", etc., initial greeting.
"Greetings", "Good Day", "Peace be with you, also", etc., in reply.
"May the spirits watch over you"
"Let battle be joined!"
"Live Long and Prosper","Fare Thee Well"
"Be well"
"Understood","Roger","Agreed"
"I do so with honor"
"Revenge will be ours!"
"What do you want?", "What is it?"

Note! These I have quoted from miss Yejide, Thank you, who had found them in their RPG book. And which we think is the actuall meaning of the phrases.

These are the Darnassian lines given in the RPG book, so I guess it's safe to assume they are true:

“Ande’thoras-ethil.” = “May your troubles be diminished.” (A farewell.)
“Andu-falah-dor!” = “Let balance be restored!” (A war cry.)
“Ash karath!” = “Do it!”
“Bandu thoribas!” = “Prepare to fight!” (A challenge to an enemy.)
“Elune-adore.” = “Elune be with you.” (A greeting.)
“Fandu-dath-belore?” = “Who goes there?”
“Ishnu-alah.” = “Good fortune to you.” (A greeting.)
“Ishnu-dal-dieb.” = “Good fortune to your family.” (A greeting.)
“shan’do” = “Honored teacher” (A title and term of respect.)
“thero’shan” = “Honored student” (A title and term of respect.)
“Tor ilisar’thera’nal!” = “Let our enemies beware!” (A war cry.)

This looks wonderfull!

But *snif*, I am not so good at writing macros. Rolling Eyes

Could someone write here some examples I could use? Something quite simple like when I type /elfgreeting I say "Ishnu'Alah" or something?

Thanks in advance! Very Happy

Macro is a button you make, that then does something when you click it.
A macro could for example look like this.

"/g Ishnu'alah"
you would then say Ishnu'alah in guild chat.

There are much more detailed macros. I believe Drak got one where it finds out the gender of the player he have target, and the guild. If it is a member of the sentinels it then says "Ishnu'alah brother/sister <Name>"Razz
And if the targeted player is not a member of the guild it says something else. Though that's way to detailed for me to come up with such a macro xD

PostSubject: Re: Night Elf phrases and specific words!   Wed 13 Sep - 9:11

I wish I could derive a Darnassian grammar from example sentences and their translations into English.

From individual words, word components have been derived, for example:

Kaldorei = Starborne (Night Elves)
Queldorei = Highborne (High Elves)
Sindorei = Bloodborn (Blood Elves)

From these examples you can derive the following components:

Dorei = Borne (or Elves)
Kal = Star
Quel = High
Sin = Blood

From the villages Dolanaar, Satyrnaar, Thalanaar and Astranaar, you could conclude, that -naar means village. Something strange is going on with Astranaar. Astra- seems to mean star-, but that is coming from an IRL language (compare astrology, astronomy, etc.). I would expect Kalnaar or something.

From

Ishnu'alah = Good fortune to you.
Ishnu'dal'dieb = Good fortune to your family.

you can derive:

Ishnu = Good fortune
Alah = you
Dal'dieb = your family.

I don't see an obvious relation between alah = you, dal'dieb = family. How are possessive pronouns made in Darnassian?

From this analysis there is another conclusion: I am a diehard language freak.

"Astranaar" might be a foreign name of "Kalnaar". Since Astranaar is on the main road to Darnassus, It is quite possible, that travellers of different nations use it frequently as refuge. Maybe somehow the kaldorei accepted this name, or this was originally a foreign traveller village in Ashenvale, later became a major place for elves. Or it might be that it lost its original name (Kalnaar) after the burning of the village, when the kaldorei wanted to hide the name thinking it too precious to loose it again.

arafina, if your words are true...

then the tiger known as Sin'Dall truely means: Your Blood...

right?

This is not Tolkien, people. I don't think they had a philologist go through all this, it just has to sound cool. Though derriving lore from logic is fun.

right?

I doubt. Dal and dall might be different words, although I think the pronunciation might be the same. It might mean something with blood, but I expect a compound word, starting with blood-. The problem still is:

dal = your, alah = you. The only think I can see, that -al- might mean you, d- might denote a possessive prefix and -ah a personal pronoun suffix. But I don't know for other sentences.

I think the name Sin'Dall is trollish and not elvish. Stranglethorn have always belonged to the trolls, i've never even heard of elves having a base or camp there, although it could have happened in a war long ago. But the tiger can't be that old.
Also, trolls and elves comes from a comon ancestor, so it wouldn't surprise me if their language was a like.
